Madonna and Child and Souls in Purgatory

This painting resembles the images of Our Lady of Mercy that involve souls in Purgatory, but it does not place the souls within her mantle. As usual, the mantle is blue and the robe beneath is red. The 17th century was more likely than the 16th to picture the child clothed.
